FVLC President Brian Harder issues Statement on Wisconsin State Government Attacking Collective Bargaining Rights March 1, 2011 -- The Fraser Valley Labour Council (FVLC) has been actively following the events unfolding in Madison Wisconsin and throughout the United States in the attempt by state lawmakers to put forward legislation that will strip collective bargaining rights from 175,000 public sector workers. The Wisconsin government's actions are nothing short of appalling. The FVLC stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin against this effort to end free collective bargaining. Wisconsin Governor Walker needs to learn that trying to legislate rather than negotiate will NOT break the back of the labour movement as he hopes - in fact, his actions have strengthened the bond between our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin, across the United States and in Canada. Walker's actions have ignited the outcry to stop the hypocrisy that continues to plague our governments and workplaces. Delegates from the FVLC have been actively participating in rallies across the border at the state capitol in Olympia, Washington, as well as sharing information with other FVLC delegates and their unions about these events through social media. This not just a Wisconsin issue, this is not just an American issue, this is everyone's issue. Failure to acknowledge that condones these actions and invites these troubles to visit our workplaces, our provinces and our country.
