International Womens Day 2011 - 100th Anniversary
From BCFed.ca - Events celebrating the centenary of IWD are taking place on a number of dates from March 3rd to March 8th. 2011 marks the global Centenary of International Women's Day. Following a decision agreed in Copenhagen in 1911, International Women's Day (IWD) was honoured for the first time in several countries on March 19th. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, hold public office and end discrimination. However, less than a week later, on March 25, 1911, the tragic "Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire" in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women's Day events. 1911 also saw the start of the women's "Bread and Roses" campaign. Canada proclaimed March 8th to celebrate International Women's Day, and this is now celebrated around the world.
